Day 1

Day 1: Moshi / Arusha to Mandara Hut
(Elevation: 1,870 meters to 2,700 meters)

Today, your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport, followed by a scenic drive to the Marangu Gate, located on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive takes approximately 2 hours from Arusha. Upon arrival at the gate, you’ll complete the necessary registration and formalities before starting your trek.

The hike starts from Marangu Gate (1,870 meters) and takes approximately 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace. The trail winds through a lush rainforest, where you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and the sight of Blue, Black, and White Colobus monkeys. Along the way, keep an eye out for the unique Impatiens Kilimanjaris, a small flower that is endemic to Mount Kilimanjaro.

You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch along the route, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can take an optional 45-minute hike to Maundi Crater for panoramic views of the iconic Kibo peak. If you prefer to rest, you can relax at Mandara Hut after arrival.

In the afternoon, enjoy tea and a delicious dinner, followed by a peaceful overnight stay at Mandara Hut, situated at an elevation of 2,700 meters.

Day 2: Mandara to Horombo Escarpment Viewpoint and Marangu Gate
(Elevation: 2,700 meters to 3,700 meters)

After breakfast at Mandara Hut, you’ll begin your trek by departing the lush rainforest and ascending into the open moorlands, making your way toward the Horombo Escarpment Viewpoint. As you climb, you’ll pass through an otherworldly landscape dominated by towering giant lobelias and ancient groundsels, characteristic of this high-altitude region.

The trail leads you to the viewpoint, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo, both of which dominate the surrounding landscape. After spending time at the viewpoint, you’ll enjoy a packed lunch at Mandara Hut before descending back down the trail.

The descent is just as scenic, as you retrace your steps through the moorlands and rainforest, reaching the Marangu Gate in the late afternoon.
