6-Day Marangu Route – Hut-Based “Coca-Cola Route” with Extra Acclimatisation on Kilimanjaro
The 6-Day Marangu Route trek on Mount Kilimanjaro offers one of the best balances of comfort, scenery and summit success potential, making it a top choice for trekkers – especially those new to high-altitude trekking. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route”, Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route with hut accommodation, so you’ll sleep in dormitory-style mountain huts rather than tents. With real beds, mattresses and communal dining huts, it’s ideal if you want a bit more comfort and structure during your Kilimanjaro climb.
What truly sets the 6-day Marangu itinerary apart is the extra acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut. This added day at medium altitude gives your body valuable time to adjust to the thinner air, significantly increasing your chances of a successful summit while making the journey feel more manageable and enjoyable. You’ll follow a well-maintained trail through lush rainforest, giant heather moorland and high-altitude desert, all the way to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – the Roof of Africa – before descending along the same scenic route.
For trekkers who want to experience the beauty of Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems without the demands of camping, and who value a safer acclimatisation profile and improved summit odds, the 6-Day Marangu Route is a smart, appealing and time-efficient choice.

(Elevation: 1,870 meters to 2,700 meters)
Your adventure begins with a scenic 2-hour transfer from your hotel in Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport to the Marangu Gate, the official start point of your trek. After completing the registration and formalities, you’ll embark on your hike into the vibrant rainforest surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro. The air is humid, and the dense greenery of the forest wraps around you as you climb, accompanied by the sounds of birds and monkeys.
The trek to Mandara Hut will take approximately 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace. The trail is well-maintained, providing a pleasant and gradual ascent through the rainforest. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to spot Blue, Black, and White Colobus monkeys, as well as the rare Impatiens Kilimanjaris flower, endemic to Mount Kilimanjaro.
Upon arrival at Mandara Hut (2,700 meters), you’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch and have time to relax. If you’re feeling up for it, you can take a short, optional 45-minute hike to Maundi Crater. Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
(Elevation: 2,700 meters to 3,700 meters)
After breakfast, begin your hike to Horombo Hut (3,700 meters), leaving behind the lush rainforest and entering the open alpine moorland. The path steadily ascends, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Today’s hike will take approximately 5 to 7 hours, and you’ll need to pace yourself as the altitude begins to be felt. The key to a successful trek is to take it “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) in Swahili, allowing your body to adjust to the increasing elevation.
As you climb, you’ll encounter giant Senecios, the signature plant of the alpine moorland, standing proudly along the path. On clear days, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Kibo massif and the towering Mawenzi Peak. The terrain gradually changes, with the air becoming cooler as you approach Horombo Hut.
Along the way, enjoy a picnic lunch, then continue on to Horombo Hut, where you can relax and enjoy afternoon tea. In the evening, dinner will be served, and you’ll rest overnight at the hut, preparing for the following day’s adventure.

Day 3: Acclimatisation Day – Horombo Hut to Horombo Hut
(Elevation: 3,700 meters to 4,000 meters and back)
Today is dedicated to helping your body adjust to the higher altitudes in preparation for the summit push. After breakfast at Horombo Hut (3,700 meters), you’ll embark on an acclimatisation hike toward the saddle area between Mawenzi and Kibo. This gentle trek takes you up to approximately 4,000 meters, giving you the opportunity to experience higher elevation and then return to Horombo for the night—an important strategy for successful acclimatisation.
The trail offers stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and the expansive Kibo Saddle, with striking alpine desert scenery and the chance to see unique high-altitude plants like the giant groundsel and lobelias.
You’ll return to Horombo Hut for a hot lunch and spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the next day’s journey to Kibo Hut.
Highlights of the Day:
Acclimatisation Hike: Trek higher and return to aid altitude adjustment, boosting your summit success chances.
Scenic Views: Enjoy panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak and the saddle towards Kibo.

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, the trek continues towards Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters. Today’s hike will take approximately 5 to 7 hours as you ascend through the alpine desert zone, where the landscape becomes increasingly barren and rocky. The vegetation begins to thin, and the terrain becomes more rugged, providing an entirely different atmosphere compared to the lush rainforests and moorlands of earlier days.
As you approach Kibo Hut, you’ll notice the stark beauty of the surrounding environment, with vast stretches of rocky ground and minimal plant life. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see the summit of Kibo Peak rising majestically ahead. The air will become noticeably thinner, and the altitude will begin to make an impact on your stamina. It’s important to continue hiking at a slow, steady pace, and remember the “pole pole” mantra to prevent altitude sickness.
Upon reaching Kibo Hut, take time to relax, hydrate, and rest before preparing for the final push to the summit. Dinner will be served in the evening, and you’ll have an early night to rest before the challenging final ascent to Uhuru Peak, which begins at midnight.
Highlights of the Day:

(Elevation: 4,700 meters to 5,895 meters to 3,700 meters)
Just after midnight, you’ll begin the final and most demanding part of your trek — the summit push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Equipped with headlamps, layered clothing, and determination, you’ll ascend slowly through switchbacks of scree and volcanic rock under the star-lit sky.
After 5–7 hours of a strenuous uphill climb, you’ll reach Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters) on the crater rim. From here, it’s about another 1.5–2 hours of gradual ascent to Uhuru Peak, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding glaciers and the expansive African plains below. This is the moment you’ve worked so hard for — standing at the Roof of Africa!
After a short time at the summit to take photos and soak it all in, you’ll begin your descent back to Kibo Hut, where you’ll rest briefly and refuel with a hot meal. You’ll then continue down to Horombo Hut at 3,700 meters for a well-deserved night of rest.
