Greystoke Mahale – Wild Chimpanzees, Barefoot Luxury on Lake Tanganyika

Escape to Greystoke Mahale, a remote slice of barefoot luxury on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where forested mountains tumble straight into turquoise water and wild chimpanzees are your most famous neighbours. Accessible only by boat, this castaway-style camp in Mahale Mountains National Park offers one of Africa’s most exclusive wildlife experiences: tracking habituated chimpanzee families through ancient rainforest, guided by expert trackers who read every call, nest and footprint.

Between chimp treks, you’ll return to a refined yet relaxed haven of rustic-chic beach bandas, candlelit dinners on the sand and sundowners with your feet in the lake. Spend your days kayaking along the shoreline, cruising by dhow at sunset, swimming in crystal-clear water or simply watching the forest meet the beach from a shaded daybed. For travellers seeking a luxury, low-footprint chimpanzee “safari” in one of Tanzania’s most beautiful and remote corners, Greystoke Mahale is pure, unforgettable magic.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Day 1 – Mahale Mountains National Park – Greystoke Mahale

On arrival at Mahale Airstrip, you’ll be met by Greystoke Mahale representatives and escorted to a traditional wooden dhow for a scenic boat transfer along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. As you cruise over the impossibly clear water with forested peaks rising ahead, the remoteness of Mahale really sinks in – this is one of Africa’s most magical wildernesses.

Arrive at Greystoke Mahale in time for a late lunch on the beach, with the lake at your feet and the rainforest at your back. After a short rest, you’ll head into the forest on your first chimpanzee trek, following your guide and trackers as they listen for calls and read the subtle signs of the troop’s movements. With a bit of luck, you’ll spend the afternoon in the company of Mahale’s wild chimps – watching them groom, play, squabble and forage in their natural habitat.

Return to camp in the late afternoon to freshen up, enjoy sundowners on the beach and then sit down to a candlelit dinner under the stars, with the sound of waves gently lapping the shore.

Dinner and overnight: Greystoke Mahale

Travel Time: ~3.5 hrs flight from Arusha → Mahale Airstrip + 1–1.5 hrs boat transfer to Greystoke Mahale.

Day 2 – Mahale Mountains National Park – Chimpanzees, Lake & Leisure

After breakfast on the beach at Greystoke Mahale, you’ll lace up your boots and head back into the forest for another chimpanzee trek. Each day with the chimps is different – you might find them high in the trees feeding, on the forest floor grooming in family groups, or moving quickly through the vegetation as they search for food. Your expert guides and trackers will interpret the sounds and signs of the forest, giving you a deeper understanding of chimp behaviour and the wider Mahale ecosystem.

Return to camp in time for lunch and a chance to relax – perhaps with a swim in crystal-clear Lake Tanganyika, a good book in the main lounge, or a nap in your banda with the breeze drifting in from the water.

In the afternoon, you can choose how to spend your time:

  • Kayaking along the shoreline, gliding over turquoise water with the mountains rising steeply behind you, or

  • Joining a gentle boat safari, exploring hidden bays, watching for hippos and colourful birdlife, and simply soaking up the beauty of Mahale from the lake.

As the sun begins to set, return to camp for sundowners on the beach, followed by another relaxed dinner under the stars and overnight stay at Greystoke Mahale.

Dinner and overnight: Greystoke Mahale

Day 3 – Mahale Mountains National Park – Flexible Chimp Trekking & Activities

Today is a flexible day in Mahale, giving you the freedom to shape the pace of your adventure. You can choose to trek for chimpanzees in the morning or afternoon, depending on how energetic you’re feeling and where the guides think the chimps are likely to be. Each trek reveals something new – from playful youngsters swinging through the trees to older chimps asserting their place in the hierarchy.

When you’re not in the forest, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy the other activities offered by Greystoke Mahale. You might:

  • Swim or kayak in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika

  • Take a gentle boat excursion along the shoreline, looking for hippos and birdlife

  • Join a relaxed forest or village walk (if available) to learn more about the area’s ecology and culture

  • Or simply unwind on the beach or in the lounge with a book, soaking up the tranquillity of this remote paradise

As evening falls, gather on the sand for sundowners as the sky turns pink over the lake, followed by another candlelit dinner and a peaceful night at Greystoke Mahale.

Dinner and overnight: Greystoke Mahale
