Covering and area of 300 square meters on the southern side of Lake Natron, Engaresero Footprint Site, is said to contain the best-preserved fossilized modern hominid footprints in Africa along with zebra and bovid tracks. However, until now there has been no detailed characterisation and age determination of the footprint-bearing strata (the Footprint Tuff). The over 400 footprints are between 5.000 to 19.000 years old and came to the attention of scientists in 2008. They cover a cordoned off area slightly larger than a tennis court. The Engaresero footprints are fascinating due to their abundance and diversity; some tracks appear to show people ‘jogging,’ while others suggest an individual with a peculiar, possibly broken toe. Additionally, several prints indicate a group of about a dozen people, primarily women and children, traveling together
