Trekking to the Dian Fossey Tomb is a must-do experience for visitors to Volcanoes National Park. This scenic hike offers not only a beautiful journey through the forest but also a powerful connection to the legacy of Dian Fossey, the renowned primatologist and conservationist.
The trek begins with a 30-minute drive from the Park Headquarters to the trailhead, followed by a 10-minute walk to the park boundary. From there, it takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the Karisoke Research Camp, where Dian Fossey is buried. Along the way, you may spot wildlife such as forest hogs, elephants, colobus and blue monkeys, as well as a variety of birds.
Reaching the tomb is a moment of reflection, honoring Fossey’s dedication to gorilla conservation. The Karisoke Research Center, now in ruins, was the heart of her groundbreaking work with mountain gorillas.
