Overview

The Lemosho Route is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. Offering breathtaking views, a fantastic acclimatization profile, and one of the highest summit success rates, Lemosho stands out as a premier trekking route. What truly sets the 8-day Lemosho Route apart from shorter itineraries is the extra time it provides for acclimatization, allowing trekkers to gradually adjust to the increasing altitude. This means a more comfortable ascent, greater chances of success, and a more enjoyable experience overall.

Starting on the western slope of Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route offers dramatic landscapes and stunning panoramas, including a climb up to Cathedral Peak (3,872 meters), one of the highest points of the Shira Volcano, where you'll enjoy some of the most spectacular views the mountain has to offer. The trek also brings you face to face with the unique Dendrosenecio kilimanjari—the alien-like plants that are exclusive to Kilimanjaro and add an extra layer of wonder to your journey.

For those seeking an unforgettable adventure that balances great scenic beauty, better acclimatization, and the best possible chance of summiting, the 8-day Lemosho Route is an ideal choice.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Lemosho Forest Camp

After breakfast at your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, you’ll be transferred to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive takes approximately 3–4 hours through the rolling hills of the Tanzanian countryside. Once you arrive at the gate, you’ll complete registration and permits, meet your mountain crew, and have a final gear check before beginning your trek.

From Londorossi Gate, you’ll take a short drive further up to the Lemosho starting point where your trek officially begins. Today’s hike is a gentle introduction to the mountain, taking you through the rich and diverse rainforest ecosystem. The trail is peaceful and less traveled, giving you a chance to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature—including monkeys swinging through the trees and exotic birds overhead.

The path gradually ascends as you wind your way through moss-covered trees, tangled vines, and vibrant undergrowth. The air is fresh and humid, and the forest canopy offers a welcome shade. You’ll arrive at Lemosho Forest Camp (also known as Big Tree Camp), nestled in the forest at 2,650 meters, where your crew will prepare a hot dinner and set up your tents for the night.

Elevation Gain: 2,100 meters (Londorossi Gate) to 2,650 meters (Forest Camp)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~6 kilometers
Habitat: Montane Forest

Highlights of the Day:

  • Lush Rainforest Trek: A beautiful walk through the montane forest filled with rich flora and fauna

  • Wildlife Spotting: Look out for Colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and tropical bird species

  • Gentle Acclimatization: An easy start to your climb, perfect for easing into the altitude

  • Lemosho Forest Camp: Peaceful and scenic first night under the stars, deep in Kilimanjaro’s forest zone

You’ll fall asleep tonight to the soothing sounds of the forest, with excitement building for the days ahead on your journey to Uhuru Peak.

Day 2: Forest Camp (2,650 meters) to Shira 1 Camp (3,550 meters)

After an early breakfast in the forest, you’ll leave the lush, green canopy behind as the trail steadily climbs out of the montane zone and into the heath and moorland zone. The change in vegetation is striking—giant heathers and lobelias begin to appear, and the terrain becomes more open, offering expansive views of the surrounding valleys and ridges.

As you gain elevation, you’ll start to feel the effects of the altitude, so “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) is the mantra of the day. The trail ascends steadily, with occasional steeper sections, and is mostly dry and dusty underfoot. As the forest thins out, Mount Kilimanjaro’s Shira Plateau opens up in front of you—an ancient caldera with volcanic formations and sweeping views.

By mid- to late-afternoon, you’ll arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the western edge of the plateau. This high-altitude camp is exposed and cooler, but the stunning views of Kibo Peak—especially at sunset—make it well worth it. Your team will have your tents set up and a warm meal ready as you settle in for your second night on the mountain.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Transition Through Ecosystems: Watch the landscape transform from rainforest to moorland

  • Sweeping Views: Begin to see the Shira Plateau and distant views of the mountain’s peaks

  • Shira 1 Camp Sunset: Enjoy your first clear views of Kibo Peak as the sun sets behind the mountain

  • First Night Above the Clouds: A magical moment as you camp high on the plateau

With more exposure to open skies and cooler air, this day marks your real entry into Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes. Rest well—you’re now trekking on ancient volcanic ground.

Elevation Gain: 900 meters
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Distance: ~8 kilometers
Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,550 meters) to Shira 2 Camp (3,900 meters)

Elevation Gain: 350 meters
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~7 kilometers
Habitat: Moorland / High-altitude Desert

Today’s trek is a relatively gentle but important acclimatization day as you journey deeper across the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. The trail is a slow, steady ascent, winding through surreal volcanic landscapes dotted with giant senecios, lobelias, and other unique alpine flora.

You’ll walk across open moorland with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, and if the weather is clear, you’ll enjoy panoramic sights of Mount Meru in the distance and Kibo Peak looming ahead. The slower pace is designed to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude, which plays a vital role in your summit success.

Upon arrival at Shira 2 Camp, perched at 3,900 meters, you’ll enjoy lunch and have the afternoon free to rest or take a short acclimatization hike toward Lava Tower, if desired. The campsite offers fantastic views of the summit, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Shira Plateau Traverse: Cross one of the highest and most scenic plateaus in Africa

  • High-altitude Flora: Spot unique plants like giant senecios and alpine everlastings

  • Acclimatization Opportunity: A gentle day to help your body adjust to altitude

  • Epic Sunset Views: Shira 2 Camp offers spectacular views of Kilimanjaro and the stars above

As you settle in at Shira 2 Camp, you’ll start to feel the growing anticipation of what lies ahead—higher altitudes, more dramatic landscapes, and the journey toward the summit.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,900 meters) to Lava Tower (4,640 meters) and Descent to Barranco Camp (3,950 meters)

Elevation Gain: 740 meters
Elevation Loss: 690 meters
Total Distance: ~10 kilometers
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert to Moorland

Today is a key acclimatization day on the Lemosho Route and one of the most dramatic in terms of scenery and terrain. You’ll begin your trek from Shira 2 Camp, heading gradually uphill into the stark, beautiful alpine desert zone. The landscape becomes more barren and rocky as you ascend, with sparse vegetation and wide open views of Kilimanjaro’s towering flanks.

Your destination for the first part of the day is the Lava Tower—a striking 90-meter-high volcanic rock formation standing at 4,640 meters. This is the highest point you’ll reach today and an important stop for acclimatization. Although you won’t stay here long, the exposure to this altitude helps your body adjust for the days ahead.

After a break and lunch near the Lava Tower, you’ll begin your descent to Barranco Camp, set in a sheltered valley at the base of the Great Barranco Wall. The descent provides much-needed recovery time as you drop back below 4,000 meters, allowing your body to benefit from the high-altitude exposure earlier in the day.

As you approach Barranco Camp, you’ll be rewarded with views of the impressive wall that you’ll climb tomorrow, and if skies are clear, a striking sunset over the plains below.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Lava Tower Acclimatization: Reach 4,640 meters to help your body adjust to high altitudes

  • Varied Landscapes: Transition from alpine desert to lush valleys with incredible mountain backdrops

  • Descending for Recovery: Climb high and sleep low for effective acclimatization

  • Barranco Valley Views: Arrive at one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, beneath the towering Barranco Wall

By the end of today, you’ll have experienced significant altitude gains and one of the most rewarding trekking days—setting you up for greater success on your journey toward the summit.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,950 meters) to Karanga Camp (4,035 meters)

Elevation Gain: ~85 meters
Distance: ~5 kilometers
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Your day begins with one of the most exhilarating features of the Lemosho Route—the Barranco Wall, a towering rock face that rises sharply above the camp. Despite its intimidating appearance, the climb is non-technical and safe, with your guides leading you through the best handholds and footholds. This fun scramble brings you to the top of the wall, where panoramic views of the Karanga Valley and the distant glaciers of Kibo await.

From here, you’ll continue along a series of gentle ridges and valleys carved by centuries of lava flow, gradually ascending and descending through stark alpine desert terrain. The scenery is dramatic and ever-changing, with massive rock formations and open vistas in every direction.

After reaching Karanga Camp, you’ll take a break before beginning an important part of your acclimatization process. After a couple of hours of rest, you’ll complete an acclimatization hike in the direction of Barafu Camp, gaining approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in altitude. This brief climb is crucial in preparing your body for the higher altitudes to come. After reaching the designated elevation, you’ll return to Karanga Camp for dinner and rest.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Barranco Wall Adventure: A fun and scenic scramble with unforgettable mountain views

  • Alpine Desert Trek: Cross a moonscape-like landscape with sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes

  • Acclimatization Hike: Prepare your body for summit day with a strategic hike up and down from Karanga

  • Sunset at Camp: Watch the sun set over the Shira Plateau and catch glimpses of Mawenzi Peak

After today, you’re now fully immersed in high-altitude trekking. With your body better acclimated, you’re one step closer to the summit. Tomorrow, you head to Barafu Camp—your final stop before summit night.

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035 meters) to Barafu Camp (4,640 meters)

Elevation Gain: 605 meters
Distance: ~4 kilometers
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s trek is shorter but vital, taking you from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit push. The trail ascends steadily across a windswept alpine desert, with minimal vegetation and stark, rocky terrain. As you climb higher, the air becomes thinner, and your pace will slow, but the incredible views of the Kibo Peak looming ahead offer constant motivation.

The route follows a ridge that leads you toward the southeastern face of Kilimanjaro. You’ll pass over volcanic scree and weathered rock, with sweeping views behind you of the valleys and peaks you’ve already conquered. Though the elevation gain is modest, the high altitude makes this section feel more demanding.

Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, located on a narrow, exposed ridge, you’ll rest, hydrate, and begin your final preparations for the summit attempt. The camp’s location provides a clear view of the summit route you’ll tackle in just a few hours. Dinner is served early, as you’ll be waking before midnight to begin the long ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Short but Important Ascent: Gain elevation gradually to optimize acclimatization before summit night

  • Barafu Camp Views: Take in awe-inspiring views of Mawenzi Peak and the glacial slopes of Kibo

  • Summit Prep: Final rest, hydration, and briefing before the biggest adventure of your trek

  • Early Sleep: Rest as much as possible—you’ll be waking around 11:00 PM to begin your summit attempt

With Barafu as your launchpad, you’re now poised for the most rewarding and challenging part of your Kilimanjaro journey—summiting Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa.

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,640 meters) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) to Millennium Camp (3,950 meters)

Elevation Gain: 1,255 meters (to Uhuru Peak)
Elevation Loss: 1,945 meters (to Millennium Camp)
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours to summit, 4–6 hours to descend
Habitat: Arctic (summit), Alpine Desert (descent)

Today is summit day—the most challenging and exhilarating part of your Kilimanjaro adventure! Your journey begins just after midnight. After a light snack and hot tea, you’ll set out into the darkness with headlamps guiding your way. The air is cold, the terrain is steep and scree-covered, and the climb is both mentally and physically demanding. You’ll take it “pole pole” (slowly, slowly), step by step under a sky full of stars.

After 6–8 hours of a steady uphill push, you’ll reach Stella Point (5,756 meters) on the crater rim. Here, you’ll be greeted by a magnificent sunrise lighting up the glaciers and the rugged crater below. Another 1–2 hours along the rim brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters)—the highest point in Africa. Take your moment at the summit to celebrate your achievement with photos and memories that will last a lifetime.

After a short stay at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and brunch. Then, you’ll continue down to Millennium Camp, where the air is thicker and warmer. You’ll spend your final night on the mountain here, exhausted but elated.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Midnight Summit Ascent: Experience the awe of climbing under a starry sky

  • Stella Point: Reach the crater rim and witness one of the most breathtaking sunrises on Earth

  • Uhuru Peak: Stand on the “Roof of Africa” at 5,895 meters—Africa’s highest point

  • Emotional Descent: Reflect on your achievement as you descend through ever-changing landscapes

  • Millennium Camp: Rest in a warmer, more comfortable camp with lower elevation air

You’ve conquered Kilimanjaro—congratulations!

Day 8: Millennium Camp (3,950 meters) to Mweka Gate (1,650 meters)

Elevation Loss: 2,300 meters
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland to Montane Forest

After a restful night at Millennium Camp, your final day on Mount Kilimanjaro begins with a leisurely breakfast. Today’s trek is a long and steady descent, transitioning from the alpine moorland back into the lush montane rainforest. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially if there has been rainfall, so trekking poles and good boots are recommended.

As you descend, the air gets warmer and richer in oxygen, and the landscape becomes increasingly green and vibrant. You’ll hear birds chirping and may spot monkeys in the trees, bringing your Kilimanjaro experience full circle.

You’ll eventually arrive at Mweka Gate (1,650 meters), the official endpoint of your trek. Here, you’ll sign out of the national park, and receive your climbing certificate—a well-earned reward for your incredible journey.

From the gate, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi or Arusha, or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your travel plans. After a hot shower and a celebratory meal, you can finally kick back and reflect on the achievement of a lifetime.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Lush Forest Descent: Trek through the cool, shaded rainforest filled with birds and wildlife

  • Mweka Gate Finish: Celebrate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro climb

  • Climbing Certificate: Receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate

  • Return to Civilization: Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest and celebration

Congratulations—you’ve completed the full 8-day Lemosho Route and stood at the Roof of Africa!
